The eyes of the golfing world might not be focused on Rome just yet, but with just six months to go before the 2023 Ryder Cup begins, that will soon change. As of now, however, most of the focus is understandably on the first major of the year set to be held at Augusta National in Georgia.

The Masters takes centre stage

In particular, with Rory Mcllroy chasing the career Grand Slam, the narrative in the professional game is heavily centred on what might happen on the hallowed fairways of the Masters when he tees off. Tellingly, this sense of expectation reached new heights in the lead-up to the event after the latest golf odds showed the Northern Irishman to be the outright favourite to win his first green jacket and in doing so, make history.

Indeed, if you bet on US Masters outright markets, you will find Mcllory at odds of just 13/2 to win the tournament. Accomplishing this feat would mean that Mcllroy becomes only the seventh man in history to win the career Grand Slam. The stakes, as you can see, are going to be higher than ever during the Masters but once all the patrons and players drive down Magnolia Lane and leave the course on the evening of Sunday the 9th of April, attention will then begin to shift to the Ryder Cup in late September.

Perhaps more than ever, the world of golf needs the unique sense of camaraderie that only the Ryder Cup can offer after a year of unprecedented division at the top of the professional game that has been brought on by the advent of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League.

Yes, golf is in desperate need of a tournament that always transcends the sport by bringing people together. That is the age-old magic of the Ryder Cup, and in 2023, the City of Rome will provide the ideal location for a new dawn to break on the professional game.

The right host at the right time

The Marco Simone Golf & Country Club will serve as the venue for the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup. Anyone who has spent time at this golf club or spoken to the people who run it will know that the organizers of the competition couldn’t have picked a better host for a tournament that was first played in 1927. Essentially, the honour of staging the Ryder Cup is not lost on the passionate Italian hosts who will look to offer a level of hospitality that this tournament has never seen before in its 96-year history

As for the course itself, it has been designed on 150 hectares of exquisite Roman countryside. Without question, battling it out on these rolling hills on the outskirts of the Eternal City will add to the Ryder Cup’s sense of being a timeless competition.

Rome will usher in a new era of professional golf

There are, of course, fresh chapters set to be written in the fabled story of the Ryder Cup and they will be inked in from the 29th of September to the 1st of October.

This event will signal the start of a new era of the iconic team competition on account of the fact that professional golf has changed beyond recognition since the last Ryder Cup was held in 2021 at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin. In many ways, you could say that there isn’t a better place to mark the beginning of a new unified future in professional golf than on European soil; a continent that is celebrated for its stance on prosperity and harmony.
