A coalition of 25 Republican governors has issued a joint statement expressing solidarity with Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his implementation of robust border protections. The governors criticized President Joe Biden for allegedly leaving the United States “completely vulnerable” to unprecedented levels of illegal migration. The open letter, signed by state leaders from across the country, was critical of Biden’s approach, accusing him of attacking and suing Texas for taking measures to protect American citizens from the surge in illegal immigrants, the influx of deadly drugs such as fentanyl, and potential threats from terrorists entering the country.

The signatories pledged their support to Abbott’s utilization of various tools and strategies, including the deployment of razor wire fences, to secure the border. The letter underscored the coalition’s action in response to what they perceive as the Biden administration’s refusal to enforce existing immigration laws and its alleged illegal allowance of mass parole for migrants who entered the country unlawfully.

Abbott’s prolonged legal battle with the Biden administration centers on Texas’ efforts to stem the flow of illegal immigration. Recent tensions were further heightened following a Supreme Court ruling that authorized federal Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire installed along the US-Mexico border by Texas authorities. Abbott criticized Biden for neglecting to enforce immigration laws and accused the administration of violating them.

The Texas governor contends that the record-breaking migration numbers in recent years amount to an “invasion.” Abbott invoked constitutional authorities that permit a state to defend itself against foreign incursions, asserting that this authority supersedes federal statutes to the contrary. He argued that Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and other personnel are acting on that authority, as well as state law, to secure the Texas border.

The ongoing dispute reached a critical juncture when Texas employed state National Guard troops to block federal Border Patrol agents from accessing a 2.5-mile stretch along the border with Mexico. The case was brought before the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the federal government.

Last month, Border Patrol reported a staggering 300,000 encounters with illegal immigrants, marking an all-time high. House Republicans accused Biden of facilitating an “invasion,” while Democrats argued against blocking entry to asylum seekers, deeming it “cruel” and “inhumane.”

As part of ‘Operation Lone Star,’ Abbott has sought to build barriers along the border and detained around 500,000 illegal immigrants. Texas has also transported over 97,000 migrants, permitted into the country by federal authorities, to Democrat-run jurisdictions in New York City, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.

Simultaneously, the Republican Governors Association (RGA) issued an official statement listing the 25 Republican-led states expressing support for Texas amid the ongoing dispute. The RGA’s statement criticized President Biden and his administration for allegedly leaving Americans and the country vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration. The association highlighted the refusal to enforce immigration laws and the perceived illegal allowance of mass parole for migrants who entered the country unlawfully.

The RGA expressed solidarity with Governor Abbott, emphasizing the importance of utilizing every available tool and strategy, including razor wire fences, to secure the border. The statement underscored the urgency of the situation and the coalition’s commitment to addressing the border crisis effectively.
