Russia began exercises with its Yars intercontinental missile system and several thousand troops on Wednesday (29 March). This is likely to be another attempt by Moscow in order to demonstrate its nuclear power.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, has made the Yars missile systems, which have replaced the Topol, part of Russia’s invincible weapon and the mainstay for its ground-based nuclear arsenal.

The defence ministry stated that the exercises involved more than 3,000 military personnel as well as 300 pieces of equipment.

The drills include a comprehensive Strategic Missile Forces control check of the Omsk rocket formation, as well as a command-and-staff exercise with the Novosibirsk nuclear missile formation equipped with Yars systems.

The ministry did not identify the regions but stated that the Yars mobile systems would conduct manoeuvres in three Russian regions during the exercises.

"Strategic missilemen will also carry out a series of measures to camouflage modern aerial reconnaissance methods in cooperation with formations, units and the Aerospace Forces."

The Yars mobile intercontinental missile system is said to have an operational range 12,000 km (7.500 miles) but there are not many confirmed technical and tactical characteristics.

Military bloggers claim that the systems can carry multiple, independently targetable nukes and can be mounted on truck carriers or deployed in silos.

Russia has been conducting numerous military exercises, either with other countries or alone, since the invasion of Ukraine last February.

It also intensified military training with Belarus, which borders Russia and Ukraine, by conducting a series comprehensive drills in the last year.

Belarus claimed that it decided to host Russian tactical nukes because of Western sanctions. It also said that it was responding to a NATO member state’s military buildup near its borders.

Although Joe Biden, the president of the United States, indicated that he was concerned about the decision, the United States claimed it hadn’t seen any indications suggesting that Russia is closer to using strategic nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
